Singam

everyone owns a 12 wheeled 60 foot long truck

Last week some interesting quotes were made in the tech world. In the D8 conference Steve Jobs was interviewed. To a question on whether Tablets will replace PCs in the future, he said PCs are like trucks not everyone will need them in the future. Later Steve Ballmer was asked about this in the same D8 conference, he kind of agreed to that, but just said Tablet are PCs as well. He cited MACs as "Mactrucks" that is a different story.
There is a strong change happening in the tech industry interms of smart phones and tablets which have begun the change. I used to think how do I explain this to everyone who does not understand the concept of real performance, who still refer to the computer as Intel computer and who still believe in Intel inside campaigns.
Sometime back I drove my relative's Indigo CS. Being a Swift owner, I felt that Indigo was too rough and too heavy. That too making a car in the year of 2009, after being in car business for several years and seeing a lots of competing cars I wondered how can Tata still make such a car and sell it as self driven in all their ADs. I got my answer last week.
I was coming back from Trichy and got down at Silk Board at 10.00pm. It was raining too. The bus from Trichy was late by 2 hours and I could only blame the invisible Stars for putting me in that situation. When I was crossing the bridge, a 60 feet lengthy 12 wheeler monster screeched and stopped. The cleaner boy popped up his head and asked me how to go to Old madras road in Hindi. Yes, Hindi I can understand too :) I replied him in Tandi (Tamil + Hindi)  that I am going there, and can I come in? He said yes and opened the door (Window?)
All you folks who drive their Suzukis, Fiats, Opels and even Indicas, we are riding rockets  compared to what I experienced on that truck. I literally screamed couple of times that truck is getting into the drain. But there was enough time for the driver to turn it back towards the road. I mean literally there was enough time. Had it been a car, by the time you the drain one feet away and before you respond it will be in the drains. This truck moves sooo slow that driver gets enough time. Most of time the driver used both his hands to change the gears. I could not believe that I am in 2010. I have seen bus drivers doing the same 15 years ago. Looks like that India is still remaining. Everytime the truck was crossing a hump, I felt like a mini crash, so much noise so much shakes. It took 1 hour and 15 minutes for us to reach KR Puram from Silk Board without any traffic. The poor truck driver had to take a U turn as he had to go towards Chithur. It took 2 minutes to make that U turn :(
I dont wonder anymore about how TATA engineers can still make cars which give such driving pleasures. But they have learnt and that is why they are making Vista.
Ok coming back to the point, the Wintel is like Tatas who with their long standing profts and marketshare did not see what was coming and are left behind for the future. Now they are trying to catch up, they are not upto the mark. Apple has made Ipad with 256MB of RAM,  a Cortex A8 CPU, Power VR GPU and their customized OS that is much resposive and pleasure to use compared to much betterly specced netbooks. Other Vendors including my own employer are coming with competing products by the end of the year. Intel has Moorestown, but it is not upto the mark in use cases like Audio, Video and web browsing. In new era of technology what matters is responsivess of the OS and power it consumes. The new reiqrements comes like I want to task X with this much amount power consumption but with the responsiveness is maintained. No more perf requests, everyone is screaming about responsiveness and millwatts of power.
ARM systems are built like cars by adding only necessary processing power and customizing the software to mainitain responsiveness. PCs are built like Trucks which can definitely process much more than cell phones or tablets but who will need them as when someone can achieve the same tasks with much lesser power, more portability using cell phones or Tablets. I can do the same blogging from my ipod touch which is currently in the dock blasting AR Rahman hits.
We are in interesting times of technology and we are witnessing something changing fundamentally. Truck makers are building cars and car makers are trying to build much faster cars and trying to maintain the same mileage. Who is going to win? May be both, but it will be us consumers who are going to have the fun :)
